Mimi Chakraborty, the acclaimed actress and former TMC MP, has recently been at the center of controversy after participating in protests demanding justice for a 31-year-old doctor’s rape and murder in Kolkata. Chakraborty, along with fellow actors Riddhi Sen, Arindam Sil, and Madhumita Sarcar, joined the August 14th demonstration against the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital incident. Following her participation, Chakraborty reported receiving disturbing rape and death threats on social media.

Chakraborty took to the microblogging site X to share screenshots of the "threatening" messages she received. In her post, she expressed her shock and outrage: “And we are demanding justice for women, right? These are just a few of them. Where rape threats have been normalized by venomous men masking themselves in the crowd saying they stand by women. What upbringing and education permits this????”

Born on February 11, 1989, Chakraborty is renowned for her work in Bengali cinema and television. She first gained recognition with her lead role in the film Bapi Bari Jaa and made her mark in the television series Gaaner Oparey. In 2019, she transitioned into politics, serving as a Member of Parliament for the Jadavpur constituency until February 2024.

In response to the threats, social media users have voiced their concern and called for immediate action. Nilanjan Das commented, “A former MP receives rape threats! Alarming reminder of women’s vulnerability. @DCCyberKP, take action now to safeguard women’s safety.” Another user, Arijit Dutta, urged, “Get these two B.....ds arrested and castrated.” Arkajyoti Chakraborty added, “We want justice,” while others questioned if the threats reflect a deeper, ingrained political malaise.

The Kolkata Police have been urged to address the issue promptly, with some users criticizing their focus on other matters, like college student arrests. “Kolkata police is too busy arresting college students!” Andy Kumar remarked.

Chakraborty's involvement in the protest and her subsequent experience with social media abuse highlight ongoing issues of gender-based violence and the challenges faced by public figures advocating for justice. The protests in Kolkata, named “Women, Reclaim the Night,” saw women across the city taking to the streets to demand accountability and safety.

In an Instagram post, actress Mimi said, "Justice delayed is justice denied," and reflected on the sorrow that gripped her beloved city. "Today, my City of Joy cried in every corner as we failed as humans," she wrote, highlighting the collective outcry for justice that echoed through every lane. Reinforcing her earlier sentiments, she reiterated her stance: "Punishment should be so severe that even the thought of committing such a heinous crime sends shivers down the spine. NO MERCY PLEA."
