US vice president Kamala Harris on Tuesday won the island state of Hawaii along with four electoral votes, marking it the Democratic party’s 10th continuous win in the region. Hawaii’s last Republican candidate was chosen 40 years ago, when Ronald Reagan emerged as the winner in 1984.
Democrat Mazie Hirono also retained the US Senate from Hawaii after defeating Republican former state Republican Bob McDermott.
Hirono, who serves on the Senate Armed Services, Judiciary, and Veterans Affairs committees, was first elected to the Senate in 2012. She previously represented Hawaii in the US House and served as both lieutenant governor and a state legislator. Born in Japan, Hirono immigrated to the US with her mother and brother during her elementary school years and holds the distinction of being the first Asian American woman elected to the Senate.
Hawaii is a predominantly blue state, with Democrats holding all statewide elected offices and both of the state’s US House seats. Democrats have also maintained control of over three-quarters of the seats in both Hawaii's state House and Senate.
The US Presidential elections 2024 witnessed a tight race between the former US President and the current vice president.
The final polls closed in the blue state of Hawaii at 12 am ET or 10:30 am IST.
