Elon Musk escalated his tariff war against the Donald Trump administration as he called Peter Navarro a 'moron' and 'dumber than a sack of bricks'. The jibe came after Navarro recently called Elon Musk a car assembler after Musk's reaction to reciprocal tariffs.
But how did it all start? After Donald Trump announced the reciprocal tariffs, owing to which Elon Musk lost billions, Musk questioned Navarro's Harvard degree in a straight disapproval of the tariffs. Musk also said he would like a zero-tariff situation between the US and the EU. Navarro gave a measured reaction to Musk's attack and said his comments on tariffs were not surprising as he is a car assembler and relies on imports.
"When it comes to tariffs and trade, we all understand in the White House - and the American people understand - that Elon is a car manufacturer, but he's not a car manufacturer. He's a car assembler," Navarro said, adding that many Tesla parts came from Japan, China and Taiwan. "He's a car person. That's what he does, and he wants the cheap foreign parts."
"The difference is in our thinking and Elon's on this is that we want the tires made in Akron. We want the transmissions made in Indianapolis. We want the engines made in Flint and Saginaw, and we want the cars manufactured here," Navarro said.
That was enough to infuriate Musk. "By any definition whatsoever, Tesla is the most vertically integrated auto manufacturer in America with the highest percentage of US content. Navarro should ask the fake expert he invented, Ron Vara," Musk said. Ron Vara is an anagram of Navarro.
"Tesla has the most American-made cars. Navarro is dumber than a sack of bricks," Musk said.
What is Elon Musk's take on tariff?
Elon Musk hopes to see complete freedom of trade between the United States and Europe. "At the end of the day, I hope it's agreed that both Europe and the United States should move ideally, in my view, to a zero tariff situation, effectively creating a free trade zone between Europe and North America," Musk said.
