Deposed Bangaldesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday congratulated Donald Trump for emerging on top in the presidential race, saying his "resounding victory" was a testament to his leadership qualities. Sheikh Hasina, who fled Bangladesh due to unabated protests against her government in August, conveyed wishes to the new president-elect through a statement released by her Awami League party.
"The President of the Bangladesh Awami League, SheikhHasina, has congratulated Donald J. Trump on his election as the 47th President of the United States of America. She stated that his resounding election victory is a testament to his extraordinary leadership qualities and the immense trust bestowed on him by the American people," the statement read.
The statement by the party also said that the ex-prime minister of Bangladesh would recall her fond moments and interactions with Donald Trump and Melania, whom she met during his first presidency. "Sheikh Hasina hoped that under his second presidency, the bilateral relations between the friendly countries of Bangladesh and the United States of America would be further strengthened".
Further, the statement added that Sheikh Hasina hopes Trump would advance the bilateral and multilateral interests of both countries during his new term.
"Sheikh Hasina wished the President-Elect and his family good health, long life, and happiness, and the friendly people of the United States of America continued peace, progress, and prosperity," the statement concluded.
Earlier, Sheikh Hasina had alleged the US of hatching a conspiracy to oust her, a charge that the Biden administration had outright refuted. "Any implication that the United States was involved in Sheikh Hasina's resignation is absolutely false. We have seen a lot of disinformation in recent weeks and we were made incredibly committed to strengthening information, and integrity across the regional ecosystem, especially our partners in South Asia," US state department had then said.
On August 5, Sheikh Hasina stepped down as prime minister and fled to India following escalating protests against her administration. An interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, is now in control of the country.
Donald Trump on Wednesday won the election against his democratic rival Kamala Harris after a grueling election campaign that saw the two rivals at loggerheads through the past four months. The president-elect Donald Trump has secured 277 electoral votes and has the majority to win the White House. He is leading in key races left to be called, including Michigan. Trump declared victory as he addressed his followers at his campaign's watch party in West Palm Beach, Florida. He told the MAGA camp that it was “time to unite” as a country. “It’s time to put the divisions of the past four years behind us,” he said.
