President-elect Donald Trump slammed the Democratic Party on Sunday, claiming they made a "big mistake" by involving "losers like" former Republican Representative Liz Cheney and her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, in their 2024 election campaign.
Taking to X, in a post on his Truth Social platform he said: "The Democrats made a BIG mistake in getting Crazy Liz Chaney, and her father, Dick, involved in their campaign for President. It made the Republicans angry, and the Democrats just plain scratching their heads in amazement."
"It is always a bad idea to bring 'losers' into a political campaign!" he added.
Despite being a Republican Cheney endorsed Kamala Harris, arguing that Trump's behaviour during the 2021 US Capitol incident demonstrated that he “can never be trusted with power again”.
Her father, Dick Cheney, former US Vice-President, has similarly indicated his intention to support Harris in the 2024 election.
The former Wyoming Representative showed significant support for Harris, especially in the final days of the campaign, a move that was met with ongoing criticism from Republican circles.
Earlier, during an interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, Trump said Cheney is a war hawk. "Let's put her with a rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her, OK? Let's see how she feels about it, You know, when the guns are trained on her face".
"They're all war hawks when they're sitting in Washington in a nice building saying, 'Oh, gee, well let's send 10,000 troops right into the mouth of the enemy," he added.
Later, Trump put out a clarification on Truth Social in which he wrote that he called Liz Cheney a war hawk and a dumb war hawk.
"All I'm saying about Liz Cheney is that she is a War Hawk, and a dumb one at that, but she wouldn’t have ‘the guts’ to fight herself. Her father decimated the Middle East, and other places, and got rich by doing so. He’s caused plenty of DEATH, and probably never even gave it a thought. That’s not what we want running our Country!" Trump said.
