The brother of newly elected Pope Leo XIV is facing backlash over a series of offensive Facebook posts, drawing global attention to the family ties of the Roman Catholic Church’s first US-born pope, reports the Guardian.
Louis Martin “Lou” Prevost, the oldest of the three Prevost brothers, has sparked controversy after social media users and journalists uncovered several inflammatory posts made under his name.
While his brother Pope Leo XIV (born Robert Prevost) is seen as calm and open-minded, Lou’s Facebook posts show strong support for far-right politics.
According to the Guardian, one of Lou’s most talked-about posts shared a video that called Democratic congresswoman Nancy Pelosi a “drunk c**t”.
In another post, he wrote: “Barack Obama and the Democratic party long for the total destruction of our way of life and turning this country into a dictatorship, and a racist one on top of it.”
He also called for the arrest of Democratic politicians who met Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy, following Zelenskyy’s Oval Office exchange with Donald Trump. Lou wrote that they should face “charges of treason”.
Another post shared an anti-LGBTQ+ meme that read: “Your child isn’t trans – you’re just a shitty parent.”
In an interview with ABC News, Lou referred to former Pope Francis’s inclusive attitude towards LGBTQ+ Catholics by saying he was “a little more liberal with the transsexuals and the homosexuals and whatnot”.
'Been very quiet, biting my tongue'
Appearing on the Piers Morgan Show after the scandal broke, Lou said of his Pelosi post: “I wouldn’t have posted it if I didn’t kind of believe it.” He added, “However, I had no idea that what was coming was coming this soon,” referring to his brother’s election as pope. “And I can tell you since then I’ve been very quiet – biting my tongue – about some of the stuff that is out there on social media.”
Social media users were quick to react to this matter.
One comment read, “Your brother must be soooo embarrassed.” Another said, “Your comments and language is unbecoming of anyone. Shame on you. Besides it being nasty it’s also factually incorrect. I hope this is not a reflection on the Roman Catholic church.”
The Prevost brothers, Lou, John, and Robert (now Pope Leo XIV), were raised in a Catholic home in Chicago and attended Catholic schools. John became a Catholic school principal, Lou served in the US Navy, and Robert was ordained in 1982 before rising through the Church’s ranks to succeed Pope Francis and become pope on May 8.
