Son of slain scribe slams oppposition silence

Send Push
Anshul Chhatarpati , son of slain journalist Ram Chander Chhatarpati , expressed shock Sunday over the "complete silence of opposition parties" on what he alleged was "visible special treatment" by the Haryana government of his father's convicted murderer, Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim .

Anshul was reacting to Ram Rahim's application for 20-day parole , coinciding with the October 5 assembly vote in the state. He had fought a 17-year legal battle that led to the dera chief being convicted in Jan 2019 of his father's murder.

"He (Ram Rahim) committed grave offences and was convicted, but is now insignificant in public. I would say conduct a survey or analyse the result of past few elections, everything would be clear that the dera chief had no impact," Anshul told TOI.

Anshul said his family's objection to further parole for the dera chief had nothing to do with polls. "We are victims and suffered a lot in life after he killed my father. Fortunately, we got justice. But we are pained every time he is released. The government amended the law in 2022 to ensure he does not fall in the category of hardcore criminals and gets released. The govt should not shower favours on such criminals."
