NEW DELHI: Cabinet on Wednesday approved the construction of a new 167-km greenfield high-speed corridor connecting Shillong in Meghalaya with Silchar in Assam. The four-lane highway costing around Rs 22,800 crore would reduce the travel time between the two cities drastically.

"The development of this corridor will improve connectivity to Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur and the Barak Valley region of Assam from the mainland and Guwahati as well as substantially reduced travel distance and travel time," Govt said.

I&B minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the critical infrastructure project will reduce congestion on the existing NH-6 and boost transport infrastructure development.

Once completed, it will also ensure faster movement of defence forces to meet strategic needs.
