NEW DELHI: Several opposition MPs on Tuesday walked out of a joint parliamentary committee meeting on Waqf bill , alleging derogatory remarks by BJP member .

The Joint Committee of Parliament convened in New Delhi to deliberate on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024. However, the meeting was marred by a boycott from several opposition MPs who claimed that the panel's functioning was not in accordance with the established rules.

Among those who walked out were Gaurav Gogoi and Imran Masood from the Congress party , Arvind Sawant representing Shiv Sena (UBT), A Raja from DMK , Asaduddin Owaisi of AIMIM, Mohibbullah from the Samajwadi Party, and Sanjay Singh from AAP. These MPs expressed their strong disapproval of the proceedings.

In response to their concerns, the opposition MPs have also decided to approach the Lok Sabha speaker and voice their concerns regarding the Waqf Bill.

The opposition members rejoined the meeting after staying away for nearly one hour.

Earlier, opposition MPs also staged a walkout on Monday from the parliamentary committee meeting over allegations made by Anwar Manippady, former Chairman of the Karnataka state minorities commission and the Karnataka minorities development corporation.

The opposition MPs claimed that Manippady strayed from the meeting's agenda and made a series of accusations against the Karnataka government, as well as allegations against Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. The MPs said that the allegations were irrelevant and unacceptable.

Opposition MPs had accused Manippady of making "politically motivated" comments that violated the mandate of the Joint Parliamentary Committee, which was established to examine the Waqf Bill. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant said, "We have boycotted because the committee is not functioning with the principles and norms of the committee. Ethically and principally they are wrong. This meeting is not a platform for settling political scores."
