NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court cautioned on Friday that one should be careful enough while making comments about orders passed by courts, following remarks made by the Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy .
In a recent development, the SC has closed proceedings against A Revanth Reddy, the Telangana CM , for his contemptuous comment on the court's order granting bail to TRS leader Kavitha in the Delhi Excise scam case. The court's observation came after Reddy tendered an apology for his remarks.
The Supreme Court emphasised that while the right to fair criticism of judgments is welcome, one should not transgress limits. The court further stated that all constitutional functionaries should maintain mutual respect for one another and refrain from transgressing limits. "Though we do not wish to proceed further in the matter, we may only put on caution all the constitutional functionaries --- the legislature, the executive and the judiciary -- to discharge their constitutional duties in the spheres earmarked for them by the Constitution," the bench said as quoted by news agency PTI.
Last month, Supreme Court had taken strong exception to Telangana CM A Revanth Reddy's reported statement that "there is also a talk that Kavitha got bail because of the deal between BRS and BJP"
The Supreme Court had observed: What sort of statement is this by a responsible chief minister. That might rightly create apprehension in the minds of people. Is this a kind of statement which should be made by a chief minister. A constitutional functionary is speaking in this manner?
Following, SC ruling, Reddy issued an apology, stating that his comments were "taken out of context". "I have the highest regard and full faith in the Indian Judiciary. I understand that certain press reports dated 29th August, 2024 containing comments attributed to me have given the impression that I am questioning the judicial wisdom of the Hon’ble court," Reddy had said.
SC was hearing the 2015-votes-for-cash case in which Reddy is named as an accused, when it made the above observations on remarks on court order . In its ruling, the apex court refused to transfer trial involving CM A Revanth Reddy and others from Telangana to Bhopal. It also directed Reddy not to interfere in any way with functioning of prosecution and also told the anti-corruption bureau to not report or take instruction from the Telangana CM.
