What made Microsoft Product Manager say: I'd be fired, if Steve Ballmer was still Microsoft CEO

A Microsoft Product Manager has sparked online conversation after posting a meme that openly mocks Windows while praising Apple's macOS . Merill Fernando's post on X, which has garnered over 707,000 views and 11,000 likes, compared using Windows to leaving Earth's safety, using a popular Katy Perry meme showing the singer kissing the ground after her Blue Origin space flight.

"Me going back to macOS after being forced to spend an hour on Windows," Fernando wrote alongside the image of Perry, who recently became the subject of widespread memes following her dramatic earth-return gestures.

"If Ballmer were still CEO, I'd be fired"

Fernando acknowledged the boldness of his public critique, noting that under former CEO Steve Ballmer 's leadership, such comments would likely have resulted in termination. "If Ballmer were still CEO of Microsoft , I would have been fired," he stated, highlighting the cultural shift within the company under Satya Nadella 's leadership.

The project manager clarified that his MacBook was actually issued by Microsoft itself, demonstrating the company's increasingly platform-agnostic approach. Fernando also maintains a personal Mac Studio for side projects, including podcasting and open-source development.

When CEO Satya Nadella stirred controversy for using an iPhone
Fernando's comments reflect Microsoft's significant cultural evolution over the past decade. Ten years ago, even Nadella using an iPhone generated controversy, whereas today, such platform flexibility has become standard practice throughout the company.

Under Nadella's leadership, the company has embraced competing platforms and technologies, with Microsoft applications and services now widely available across Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android ecosystems.

This shift represents a stark departure from the Ballmer era, when using competitors' products was considered nearly heretical within Microsoft. Today, Microsoft employees regularly use various devices, not just for cross-platform testing but as their primary work machines.
