These Harvard grads simplify legal work

➤ Hemanth Bharatha Chakravarthy, Benjamin Hoffner-Brodsky and Em McGlone came together through a debate team at Harvard in 2018. Since then, they have collaborated on a number of projects in India.

➤ All three, coincidentally, had at least one parent who was a lawyer. So, maybe law was in their blood, and inspired the idea for Jhana , a venture using AI/ML to assist legal practitioners . The idea was born when Hemanth and Ben were working on algorithmic legal and governance interventions in India at the World Bank , and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation , respectively. The two found lawyers often complaining about spending a lot of time on research, hindering productivity and personal time. Lawyers were also dissatisfied with available search engines.

➤ The three built Jhana as an intelligent agent that mirrors the workings of a skilled legal team. It democratises information, including law, policy, legal precedents, and contracts, by making it accessible, searchable, and interpretable. Its ‘agent’ orchestrates specialised models – each an expert in tasks like research, analysis, and drafting – to handle complex legal assignments. This collective intelligence iterates and reflects on the information, refining its approach until it achieves the most comprehensive and accurate result.

➤ Jhana’s has attracted funds from many, including Girish Mathrubootham ( Freshworks ), Manav Garg ( Eka Software ), Harshil Mathur & Shashank Kumar ( Razorpay ), and Kunal Shah (Cred).
