Facebook-parent Meta ’s billion-dollar Superintelligence Lab is working on its first product and may launch later this year, a report has said, adding that this could be the next version of its AI model. Citing sources familiar with the matter, a report by Business Insider , a team within MSL, internally known as TBD (to be determined), is focused on developing and making the Llama 4.X models production-ready for a targeted year-end release.
The report says that the team is in a race against the clock, pushing to launch its next-generation Llama AI model , Llama 4.X, by the end of the year. This timeline is one of the first major projects to emerge from the company's newly formed team, which has already faced internal challenges and a wave of high-profile departures.
The new model is also being referred to as Llama 4.5 by some employees, signifying a significant leap in development, the report added.
Why Meta is pushing for launch of next generation of Llama models
As per the report, the urgency stems, in part, from the lukewarm reception of Meta's earlier Llama 4 models—Scout and Maverick—which were released in April. Some developers criticised the models for what they considered an underperformance in real-world tasks such as coding, reasoning, and following instructions.
As a result, the TBD team is not only building Llama 4.X but is also working to fix bugs in the previous Llama 4 version.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said during the company’s second-quarter earnings call in July that the MSL will focus on the next generation of AI models, stating, “We're making good progress towards Llama 4.1 and 4.2, and in parallel, we're also working on our next generation of models that will push the frontier in the next year or so.”
The creation of MSL in June was followed by a major hiring spree, with Meta reportedly offering multimillion-dollar compensation packages to attract top AI researchers from rivals like OpenAI , Apple and Google DeepMind.
However, this effort has been met with early setbacks. Less than two months after the lab’s launch, it has already lost several key staff members, including researchers, engineers, and a senior product leader.
