Leon Draisaitl helped the Edmonton Oilers to a 3-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks Thursday evening at SAP Center with one assist before he was removed from the game in the second period due to an undisclosed injury. While Leon Draisaitl departed prematurely, the Edmonton Oilers carried their streak along, earning their third consecutive win and two points back from the Los Angeles Kings for second in the Pacific Division.
Leon Draisaitl's unnamed injury troubles Edmonton Oilers as they beat San Jose Sharks
It was only Leon Draisaitl’s third game since missing four games because of the same problem, and worry over his well-being only grows as the regular season approaches quickly.
Jeff Skinner and Evan Bouchard were the duo that sealed the win, as Skinner scored a goal and Bouchard was responsible for two assists. Goalkeeper Calvin Pickard came through with 27 saves to help the team win. The Los Angeles Kings, on the other hand, ensured they stayed at the top of the table with a 4-2 win against the Utah Hockey Club, leaving the Oilers chasing a better playoff ranking.
The San Jose Sharks, trying to recapture their stride, endured their fourth consecutive loss (0-3-1), courtesy of Jack Thompson and Tyler Toffoli, both tallying off the back of the net. Mario Ferraro chipped in two assists, with goalie Georgi Romanov making 35 saves in a heroic attempt.
Edmonton Oilers score first, repel San Jose Sharks' rally
Connor Brown scored Edmonton's first goal at 6:22 of the initial period. Breaking in on Romanov from a breakaway created by Skinner off a pass from the neutral zone, Brown dispatched two Shark defensemen before elbowing a puck past the goalie.
Almost immediately, San Jose answered, even at 1-1, when Jack Thompson beat out Alexander Wennberg on a setup before firing a one-timer in from the right circle at 8:10.
Early in the second period, Viktor Arvidsson sent the Oilers back into the lead with a power-play marker at 2:59. Leon Draisaitl, at the right faceoff dot, feathered a laser pass to the high slot, where Arvidsson one-timed it past Romanov's blocker. His evening ended shortly after, though, as he played only two more shifts after the assist before departing the game.
The Sharks responded for the second time as Toffoli tied the game 2-2 at 8:48. Macklin Celebrini created the play with a spin move pass to Ferraro, who found Toffoli with a quick one-timer from the left hash marks.
Edmonton regained the lead at 14:57 as Skinner knocked away a wrist shot by Bouchard on Romanov for the 3-2 victory. The Oilers remained focused during the second half of the match, keeping alive their playoff chances.
