Emmet Sheehan missed the entire 2024 season as the Los Angeles Dodgers took the World Series. He had Tommy John surgery in May and has been having difficulty coming back. Now, Emmet Sheehan made a big leap forward. He threw 40 live pitches recently. That's a very good sign that he'll be coming back quickly. If everything keeps going well, Sheehan could begin a rehab assignment within weeks.
Emmet Sheehan grinding to get back into Dodgers rotation
The Dodgers drafted Emmet Sheehan in the MLB Draft several years ago. Then he advanced through the minor leagues quite quickly and played his first year in the big leagues shortly thereafter. Emmet Sheehan started 11 games and appeared in 13 games during that first-year season.
He even pitched in the 2023 playoffs, 3.2 innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks. It wasn't his best game; he gave up three runs but it was still quality experience for the young pitcher.
Before the 2024 season, the Dodgers put Emmet Sheehan on the 60-day injured list. He's been rehabbing the long process of recovering from having Tommy John surgery since.
Emmet Sheehan faced live batters for the first time last week and threw 40 pitches. That's a big step back to the field.
Emmet Sheehan joins Hurt and Ryan on a long road back to full health
Emmet Sheehan is not the only Dodgers pitcher recovering from Tommy John surgery. Right-handers Kyle Hurt and River Ryan both received the same procedure in 2024.
Emmet Sheehan had his done in May, Hurt in July, and Ryan in August. Hurt and Ryan have started throwing but have yet to pitch in bullpen sessions.
Overall, the Dodgers have 13 pitchers out on the injured list. That doesn't even include two-way sensation Shohei Ohtani, who is hitting but not pitching this year. The team is hoping to get at least some of the pitchers back later in the season to offer relief.
Although Emmet Sheehan has not pitched in a big league game since 2023, the Dodgers remain patient. They want to ensure that he's ready before returning.
