Denice Zamboanga , the reigning ONE interim women's atomweight MMA world champion, took a massive risk in pursuing martial arts excellence when she abandoned her stable government position in the Philippines. The Filipino fighter revealed that she maintained a conventional office job before reaching the heights of ONE Championship while competing in regional MMA circuits, showcasing the dramatic career shift that ultimately led to championship gold.
Denice Zamboanga: From government desk to championship gloryIt all started in Manila, where Denice Zamboanga’s older brother Drex taught her the basics of MMA fundamentals in their garage. “ It was just my brother saying, Denice, do you want to try fighting in MMA?'” That was just how it was, and then we started training together in our garage, Denice Zamboanga recalled. There were just the two of us, and it was only about five square meters of space for training. “ He was just teaching me the ground game, submissions, and takedowns, he was just teaching me the basics,” she added.
Denice Zamboanga had already tested herself internationally once before joining ONE Championship. But her foray into the private sector took off when she left government employment and travelled to Thailand. After she initially trained at Fairtex Training Centre in Pattaya, she then moved to Marrok Force in Bangkok. In the end, the wisest career move was to eventually go back to train under her brother in the Philippines.
Denice revealed in an interview with Atleta Filipina that she used to work under the Philippine government before making the big decision to resign and go to Thailand alone to pursue a better chance in the world of professional mixed martial arts. It would be a leap of faith that would transform her fighting career.
Championship success and upcoming title unification Alyona Rassohyna lost her ONE interim women's atomweight MMA world title to Denice Zamboanga at ONE Fight Night 27 in January at the historic Lumpinee Stadium. Denice Zamboanga has now been able to secure the interim gold, and now even a bigger challenge awaits against a familiar opponent.
World title unification against her close friend and reigning atomweight champion Stamp Fairtex is on the cards for the Filipino champion at ONE 173: Denver on August 1 at Ball Arena. The highly anticipated championship showdown between fans can be watched live on Amazon Prime Video for U.S. and Canadian viewers, or international audiences can watch the bout live via ONE Championship’s official broadcasting partners.
