Public anger erupts over water crisis in Akola city

Akola: As temperatures soar and water levels dip drastically, Akola city is grappling with a severe water crisis. The city's primary water source, Kantapur Dam, now holds only 26.21% of its usable water capacity. In response, Akola Municipal Corporation has decided to supply water once every 5 days to conserve the dwindling reserves.

This decision has sparked outrage among residents, especially in Malkapur locality, where water supply was already erratic; once every 15-20 days. Locals are now forced to purchase water from private tankers, putting financial strain on many households. Women are often seen queuing for hours with buckets and pots under the scorching sun.

On Thursday, in a dramatic show of protest, Shiv Sena (UBT) led a ‘Matka Andolan' outside the water supply department. Ex-corporator Mangesh Kale spearheaded the demonstration.

The protestors turned aggressive after finding that no senior official was present on the premises. They entered office of an absent executive engineer Amol Doifode, smashed chairs, furniture, and broke the earthen pots inside.
