Madikeri garbage disposal project faces delays ahead of monsoon

Madikeri: The scientific garbage disposal in Madikeri city remains unresolved, with mounting waste concerns showing no improvement. Despite finalising a tender for legacy waste clearance, the project faces delays and might not be completed before the upcoming monsoon season.

Mysuru MP Yaduveer Wadiyar and Madikeri MLA Manthar Gowda initiated the legacy waste clearance project at Stone Hill in March. Under the Swachh Bharat Mission, Rs 5 crore was allocated for scientific waste disposal, with a commitment to complete the task by June. However, despite the formal launch, the authorities showed little interest in implementing the project effectively.

The city still awaits the arrival of the necessary equipment and workforce. The Stone Hill waste disposal project in Subramanya Nagar, budgeted at Rs 5.4 crore, has a nine-month completion timeline. The funding structure includes 50% from the Union govt, 33% from the state, and 17% from the municipal council. The project aims to dispose of 76,636 tonnes of accumulated garbage but faces unexplained delays.

Municipal officials maintain that the clearance process will commence soon. However, rain might hamper this project as the garbage has to be dried completely before the segregation work.

Meanwhile, CMC commissioner Ramesh urged the contractor to begin the project at the earliest.
