KANPUR: At least three people died after a major fire broke out in a four-storey building in the Gandhi Nagar locality of Chamanganj on Sunday night, with several others feared trapped inside.
The ground and first floors house a footwear manufacturing unit, while families reside on the second and third floors. Rescue operations are underway to locate those still missing.
At around 3am, authorities retrieved the bodies of Nazmi Saba (42), her spouse Danish (45), and one of their children, all of whom perished in the blaze. Rescue teams are continuing efforts to locate the family's two remaining children, who are still unaccounted for.
Chief minister Yogi Adityanath took note of the incident and directed district authorities and fire brigade teams to reach the site immediately and launch relief and rescue operations.
ADCP Central Kanpur, Rajesh Srivastava says, "5 people have been sent to the hospital; they will be medically examined. There is very little chance of their survival. The search operation is ongoing..."
The emergency response includes twenty fire engines and over 70 firefighters, who have been battling the flames for more than four hours. Several family members have been successfully evacuated by the fire services.
According to sources, a family—comprising a couple and their three children—remains stranded on the second floor, with rescue operations underway. Authorities have cordoned off the area within a 500-metre radius on both sides. The incident occurred in Prem Nagar, under the Chaman Ganj police station limits.
The property, owned by Qasim, contains his factory on the lower floors and his family's residence above. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined. While rescue teams have reached those on the second floor, occupants of the third floor are still awaiting evacuation.
Reports indicate that five individuals, including three children, remain trapped on the second floor as rescue efforts continue. As a precaution, authorities have evacuated families from six adjacent buildings. Two explosions occurred when the fire reached the second floor, followed by a third blast five minutes later, believed to have been caused by gas cylinders.
Eyewitnesses reported that the fire originated in the basement and spread to the top floor within 20 minutes. The blaze has also affected a neighbouring footwear storage facility. Misbah-Ul-Haq Ishrat Iraqi from Jajmau confirmed that his nephew Danish, Danish's wife Nazneen, and their three daughters are trapped on the second floor. Rescue efforts for them are in progress.
Danish's father, Aqeel, managed to escape safely. Police are creating openings in Qasim’s building walls from an adjacent rooftop to aid the rescue. Water is being directed through these openings, and hydraulic equipment has been deployed to deliver high-pressure water streams to contain the fire.
ADM Rajesh Kumar, ADCP Rajesh Srivastava, Chief Fire Officer Deepak Sharma, and Mayor Pramila Pandey have arrived at the site to oversee the situation.
Chief Fire Officer Deepak Sharma stated, "Most people have been evacuated from the building, and we are making extensive efforts to extinguish the fire."
