Guwahati: All Assam Students’ Union (Aasu) held a crucial state central executive meeting on Wednesday, appointing Sarjun Hanse as the interim general secretary. This decision follows the resignation of the previous general secretary, Sankor Jyoti Baruah, who stepped down amid serious allegations of sexual abuse and threats made by his former fiance, also an Aasu member.

Sarjun Hanse, previously an assistant general secretary of Aasu, assumed the role after Baruah’s resignation and withdrawal of primary membership from the organisation. Sources indicate that Samiran Phukan, a strong contender for the position, is likely to be appointed as the permanent general secretary during the upcoming general house meeting early next year.

Hanse’s appointment is temporary until a permanent general secretary is chosen at the general house meeting scheduled for late January 2025, stated an official release from Aasu. The venue for this meeting has not yet been decided.

“In the general house meeting of Aasu, to be held in the next four months, the permanent general secretary will be announced,” read a statement from Aasu.

The organisation emphasised that Hanse’s interim appointment was made after consultations with other assistant general secretaries.

The leadership change follows allegations against Baruah by his former fiance, who accused him of sexual abuse and threats to her life. She alleged that Baruah was trying to end their relationship. Baruah, currently on interim bail, is under investigation by Dispur police.

Reacting promptly to the serious accusations, Aasu’s state executive committee convened a meeting at their headquarters in Gauhati University on Wednesday.

Baruah had been selected as the general secretary at the Morigaon convention of Aasu last year. The organization acted swiftly to address the crisis by appointing Sarjun Hanse as the interim general secretary.
