Fee row, NOC delay cast shadow over admissions to govt, granted law colleges in Gujarat

Ahmedabad: The registration process for various courses in govt universities across Gujarat has begun. However, uncertainty looms over admissions to govt and granted law colleges this year. The matter is currently under consideration in the Gujarat high court, with a final verdict expected on April 16.

Since last year, a dispute has been going on regarding admissions to law colleges affiliated with Gujarat University and other state universities. The management of granted colleges is unwilling to pay the annual inspection fee of Rs 2.5 lakh, while the govt is not issuing the required no objection certificates (NOC) for the appointment of adequate teaching staff.

Due to the deadlock between both parties, no admissions were granted in these colleges last year. A petition was filed in court over the issue. Sources suggest that a compromise was expected between the govt, the Bar Council, and college managements, but no consensus has been reached yet.

College authorities argue that the income from the fees is insufficient to cover the high inspection costs. They demand either exemption from the fee or that the govt bear it, similar to govt colleges. Some managements have even threatened to shut down their law colleges if the issue isn't resolved. All eyes are now on the HC's decision on April 16.
