James Cameron To Direct Ghosts Of Hiroshima After Avatar Sequels

James Cameron is gearing up for a major new project following his work on the "Avatar" series. The acclaimed filmmaker has acquired the rights to the forthcoming book Ghosts Of Hiroshima by Charles Pellegrino, with plans to direct a feature adaptation of the atomic bomb narrative.

Ghosts Of Hiroshima, which is set to be published by Blackstone Publishing in August 2025, continues the story from Pellegrino’s 2015 work Last Train From Hiroshima. Cameron’s film will spotlight the remarkable true story of Tsutomu Yamaguchi, a 29-year-old engineer who survived both atomic bombings during World War II. Yamaguchi was in Hiroshima on August 6 when the city was devastated by the first bomb, and then returned to Nagasaki the next day, only to endure its bombing on August 9. The bombings resulted in an estimated 110,000 to 210,000 deaths. Also Read: No Michelle Yeoh In Avatar 3 Says James Cameron. BUT... Known for his blockbuster hits, including the Terminator franchise, Aliens, and the record-setting Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water, Cameron will be returning to filmmaking outside the Avatar universe for the first time since his 1997 epic Titanic, wrote The Hollywood Reporter. His new film marks a significant departure from his recent focus on the Avatar series. Cameron is currently immersed in the production of Avatar: Fire & Ash, scheduled for release in December 2025, and has additional Avatar films planned. Although he has hinted at the possibility of stepping back from directing future installments, this remains unconfirmed. The Story Factory’s Shane Salerno, who represents Pellegrino and has a strong working relationship with Cameron, is involved in the project. Salerno co-wrote the upcoming Avatar sequels with Cameron. Cameron is represented by CAA and Greenberg Glusker.
