We all want faster broadband speeds, and it appears one UK Internet Service Provider has plans to help make that happen. Express.co.uk recently reported that EE is planning to launch a new router that will provide improved download speeds to UK homes. Now we've spotted more details about the upcoming device and what it will mean for consumers.
The new EE router, which Express.co.uk can confirm is called the Smart Hub 7 Plus, will be fully capable of beaming the web around rooms at speeds in excess of 800Mbps. At that rapid rate, it would take just seconds to download a full HD blockbuster movie - that's over 10 times faster than the current UK average.
Along with coping with those better speeds, the Smart Hub 7 Plus will feature the latest Wi-Fi 7 technology. For those not in the know, Wi-Fi 7 is far more robust than ageing W-Fi 4, 5 and 6 routers that most UK homes currently have tucked in the corner of rooms. That means it can cope with more devices connected at the same time, offers better latency for improved streaming and is built for the future.
To help boost things further, it appears that this Smart Hub 7 Plus box from EE will also work alongside a Smart WiFi 7 Plus extender.
That should mean the whole home will get those improved speeds and better downloads.
Wi-Fi 7 is the next generation of wireless networking technology that now supercedes Wi-Fi 6 and 6E. It offers dramatically faster speeds, lower latency, and improved efficiency for modern high-bandwidth applications like 8K streaming, cloud gaming, and virtual reality.
It's also built for the future, with some Wi-Fi 7 devices able to achieve data rates exceeding 40 Gbps.
Although we've spotted the router and booster, there's still no word on an official release date or price, but we will keep a close eye on things and update you when we find out more.
It's worth noting that EE already offers a Smart Hub Pro box, but that comes bundled with the firm's more expensive 1.6Gbps service.
This upcoming device should be available on slightly cheaper packages, such as the mid-tier Full Fibre 500Mbps and 900Mbps packages. Watch this space.
This update from EE comes hot on the heels of Sky recently launching its Gigafast+ router which also features WiFi 7 technology for improved connectivity. This comes bundled with two plans - Full Fibre 2.5 Gigafast+ and Full Fibre 5 Gigafast+ - with Sky boasting that they beat its rivals by offering "the UK's fastest broadband speeds from any major provider".
