Vehicles from top brands such as Toyota, Ford, BMW and Land Rover are among the top 10 "most reliable" SUVs on UK roads, according to new analysis. Data from Warranty Solutions Group (WSG) claimed the Toyota RAV4 was the number one pick with the lowest claim rate of any other model.
Analysis of more than 2,750 vehicle repair claims between June 2024 and May 2025 found the RAV4 topped the list. Research showed that an average of 9.68% of RAV4 owners in the UK made car insurance claims, receiving an average payout of £825.28. Toyota as a brand is renowned for its consistent build quality, with the RAV4 already holding a reputation as a strong, reliable pick.
Martin Binnee, operations director at WSG stressed the RAV4 was ideal for those looking for "long-term dependability" in their next second hand used car.
Martin said: "The data shows that after 25 years on the road, the Toyota RAV4 remains a benchmark for reliability in the SUV market. It's clear that Toyota's continued focus on build quality is paying off."
"In a crowded market where many models are struggling with high failure rates and expensive repairs, the RAV4 stands out as a smart choice for drivers looking for long-term dependability. These insights are invaluable for motorists weighing up which SUV truly delivers beyond the showroom."
The RAV4 was previously praised by WhatCar's? Reliability Survey with the model scoring a stunning 98.8% in the highly-regarded report. WhatCar? stressed that the RAV4 put in an "almost faultless performance", explaining that just 2% of owners had previously reported issues with their vehicles.
The Ford Puma was next on WSG's rundown of most reliable SUVs with the popular American-built design holding a claim rate of just 10,48%. Volvo's XC40 was third with just 10.65% of owners making a claim, followed by the Dacia Duster, which stood on 13.33%.
The BMW X3 came seventh in the list, with analysis showing that 1790% of owners had made claims on their model. The Land Rover Defender rounded out the top 10 with one-fifth of owners having made a claim against their policy (20.34%).
Binnee added: "Our findings suggest that while many SUVs are marketed for their rugged appeal and family practicality, owners should be prepared for a range of reliability challenges, particularly as vehicles age."
