October in the UK often means grey skies, rain and dropping temperatures. But across Europe, there are still places where the sun shines and it feels like summer hasn't quite ended. One of those places is Italy, a country famous for its food, history and warm weather. And while summer brings the crowds and higher prices, October is a much quieter time to visit.
With fewer tourists around, many of Italy's most beautiful spots become cheaper, calmer and far more enjoyable. Hotel prices drop, restaurants are easier to book and you can explore without the stress. While Italy has no shortage of incredible cities, one that's often called the most charming is Bologna, and it's surprisingly affordable to get there.

At the time of writing, Ryanair is offering direct one-way flights from London Stansted to Bologna for just £15 in October.
And with daytime temperatures reaching around 20C, it's a great spot for some late sunshine.
Bologna is known for its red-brick buildings, long archways, and laid-back feel.
It's home to the oldest university in the Western world and is a city full of character, colour and culture.
One of its most famous features is the Portici di Bologna - a network of covered walkways stretching over 60km (37 miles) across the city. They make it easy to explore on foot, whatever the weather.

Food is another major reason people visit. The city is the birthplace of tagliatelle al ragu (often called spaghetti bolognese abroad), and you'll find local dishes like tortellini, mortadella, and lasagne in traditional trattorias throughout the centre.
Popular sights include the Two Towers (Asinelli and Garisenda), which lean over the city skyline. You can climb Asinelli for some of the best views in Bologna.
The Piazza Maggiore is the main square, where people gather to sit, eat gelato, and admire the Basilica di San Petronio.
Just nearby is Neptune's Fountain, which is another well-known city landmark.
Another must-see is the Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca, which sits on a hill just outside the city.
It's linked to the centre by the world's longest portico and offers sweeping views over the countryside.
October weather is mild and pleasant, with average highs between 19C and 20C. Evenings are cooler, but it's still warm enough to sit outside and enjoy a coffee or a glass of wine.
Visitors often say that Bologna feels "authentic" and not overly touristy. One person who visited in October wrote on TripAdvisor: "It's the perfect mix of food, history and atmosphere, and you're not fighting the crowds."
Another added: "Bologna was a lovely surprise. Great weather in October, amazing pasta, and loads to see."
