A huge new airport in a beautiful holiday destination, that is also cheap, is scheduled to open very soon.

After years of construction, Long Thanh International Airport in Vietnam will start welcoming passengers next year. The mega airport is under construction in the Long Thanh district, around 40 kilometres east of Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam's most populous city, and will be the second airport to serve the city's metropolitan area.

Construction of the airport started on January 5, 2021, just a day after Vietnam's government approved the building work. The first phase was meant to be completed by September 2025, but is now scheduled for the first half of 2026.

It is being built to alleviate traffic from the existing Tan Son Nhat International Airport, the busiest air hub in Vietnam. Once Long Thanh International Airport reaches its full capacity, it will be able to handle 100 million passengers a year.

The work is being carried out in three phases, and the total investment is expected to be $18.7 billion (around £13.6 billion) making it the most expensive infrastructure project in Vietnam's history.

Designed by Korea-based architecture firm, Heerim Architects, the airport will feature four runaways and four terminals, including the under-construction Terminal one which is designed to be shaped as a lotus flower, Vietnam's national flower.

Vietnam is often recognised as one of the most affordable places to live. The beautiful South-east Asian country is known for its natural beauty, vibrant culture, and breathtaking beaches.

Bai Tu Long Bay is one of the most tranquil spots in Vietnam. The unspoilt area is part of TripAdvisor's Travellers' Choice Best of the Best and has a high rating of 4.8 stars.

One person said: "Bai Tu Long Bay has stunning scenery without the overwhelming crowds. We loved kayaking in the calm, emerald waters and just soaking in the tranquillity. It was the perfect, relaxing getaway for our family. Highly recommended."

The holiday destination is also very cheap. A pint of beer costs only 69p, while a three-course dinner for two will cost just under £17.
