'Masterpiece' Netflix drama breaks records yet again months after release

Netflix's surprise hit of 2025 has once again been smashing records, four months after it originally dropped on the streaming platform.

The news arrives as the full list of Primetime Emmy Award nominations were announced this Tuesday (15th July).

Television's biggest awards ceremony will take place this September and see popular shows such as Severance, The Last of Us and The Bear go head-to-head.

Amongst major names like Javier Bardem, Rob Delaney and Peter Sarsgaard, Adolescence breakout Owen Cooper has made history as the youngest ever nominee in the category for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series.

The 15-year-old star has broken the record, held for over 50 years, previously set by Scott Jacoby, who was 16 when he was nominated for That Certain Summer, a TV movie released in 1972.

In Netflix's riveting drama, Cooper portrayed 13-year-old Jamie Miller, who is arrested on suspicion of murdering one of his female classmates.

The breakout actor's co-star Stephen Graham called him a "rare talent" during an interview on The One Show, likening the young star to Robert De Niro.

Graham was also nominated in the category of Best Lead Actor in a Limited Series, as well as picking up a nod for co-writing the hit drama with Jack Thorne.

Their fellow co-star Ashley Walters was also recognised in the supporting category for his performance as DI Luke Bascombe.

Speaking to Deadline, Cooper admitted "it's crazy" after receiving one of his first major awards nominations.

"It's been the best year of my life," he went on. "Now it's over a little bit, I'm going back to a bit of normality. School has been perfectly fine."

Quickly drawing the attention of Hollywood, Cooper is set to star with Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie in the upcoming adaptation Wuthering Heights by Saltburn director Emerald Fennell.

Cooper has revealed that Adolescence was becoming so prominent on Netflix during the shoot that his co-stars couldn't help but take notice.

"They were all saying how big the show's gone," he said with a smile.

"And they were sick of seeing me on TV and stuff. That's what Jacob said. Margot said that she was dying to watch it."

Viewers and critics alike have all agreed on Adolescence's "masterpiece" status, so take this latest slew of accolades as a clear sign to add it to your watchlist if it's somehow slipped under your radar.

Adolescence is available to stream on Netflix.
