faced off with president Cyril Ramaphosa in the Oval Office yesterday, making false claims of anti-white racism in his country and suggesting a "white genocide" has been happening under his nose. Trump presented Ramaphosa with a video claiming that Afrikaners are being persecuted - and now he has been fact-checked live on
In a humiliating blow for the US president, former Head of News Dorothy Byrnes branded his rant "absolute drivel", explaining that none of the politicians quoted in the video Trump played were members of the African National Congress (ANC). Ramaphosa himself explained that the views expressed are not government policy.
In a segment live on LBC Radio, Byrnes said: "The politicians quoted were not ANC politicians, one of them was a man who'd been specifically thrown out of the ANC, and the other was an opponent of the ANC.
"These were dreadful people, but this is not the policy of the ANC and it is simply not the case that white farms have been seized. There is no evidence that white farms have been seized.
"Overwhelmingly, and this is covered, and I have covered it myself, the big problem of violence in South Africa inordinately affects black people. South Africa has a terrible problem with violent crime, and the chief victims are black people. There is no genocide against Afrikaners, that was absolute drivel."
Trump claimed during his ambush: "Now I will say, apartheid: terrible. That was the biggest threat. That was reported all the time. This is sort of the opposite of apartheid.
"What's happening now is never reported. Nobody knows about it. All we know is we're being inundated with people, with white farmers from South Africa, and it's a big problem."
Ramaphosa replied calmly: "We were taught by Nelson Mandela that whenever there are problems, people need to sit down around the table and talk about them. And this is precisely what we would also like to talk about."
