Flea season in the UK is proving longer than ever, with pest control specialists urging homeowners to take steps now to prevent infestations. Recent data shows a 59% increase in online searches for 'flea treatment,' highlighting how these tiny pests continue to cause problems in homes and gardens alike.
Unlike other seasonal insects, fleas do not disappear with cooler weather. Warm indoor temperatures, particularly in centrally heated homes, can trigger dormant eggs to hatch, keeping flea populations active all year round. This year's warmer-than-average summer has also created ideal breeding conditions, meaning that fleas are likely to be more widespread than usual.
James Rhoades, pest expert at ThermoPest, said garden management is a crucial step in controlling flea populations.
"One of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of fleas in your garden is to keep your grass short," he said.
"Taller grass and leaf litter create perfect hiding spots for fleas to lay eggs and thrive. Regular mowing and clearing debris can significantly reduce these safe havens."
Rhoades also stresses the importance of discouraging wildlife from visiting your garden.
"Stray cats, foxes, and rodents can carry fleas, so it's essential to secure bins and make sure food waste is properly stored. Preventing wildlife from entering your garden reduces the chance of fleas being introduced."
For households already dealing with a flea problem, Rhoades recommends a combination of indoor and outdoor measures.
Treating pets with vet-approved flea products, vacuuming carpets regularly, and washing bedding at high temperatures can all help. "Early detection is key," he said.
"By addressing both the garden environment and your home, you can stop small infestations from becoming a major problem."
With autumn approaching, homeowners are being reminded that simple preventative tasks, like mowing the lawn, clearing leaf litter, and securing bins, can make a big difference in keeping both pets and people flea-free.
By taking these steps, you can reduce the risk of infestations and enjoy a safer, more comfortable garden all year round.
