The number plate specialist has warned drivers thinking about buying their next model to make one often-forgotten consideration to .
Often the second most expensive item a motorist has, almost all drivers will often focus on how practical and economical their next vehicle is to make the best decision.
However, David Edwards, Head of Operations at National Numbers, highlighted that spending time to choose the colour of the bodywork can have several little-known advantages.
He explained: "Choosing your car colour might seem like a , but this data suggests otherwise.
"Bird droppings are not only unsightly - they're also highly acidic, which means they can cause if left untreated. If you own a red or blue car, you're unfortunately more likely to have to deal with this ."
Whilst birds are evidently not fussy about where they go, studies suggest that they are more attracted to vehicles painted in certain colours, meaning owners are more likely to have to deal with mess.
According to a study from the vehicle accessory shop Halfords, red cars are most likely to be at risk of bird mess, with 18 percent of messes recorded occurring on a model in this colour.
In comparison, models with green paintwork were found to be far less likely to gain bird mess, even if the experts behind the study were unable to assess the reason behind their decision.
However, no matter what colour car a motorist owns, David stated it is vital that they take measures to prevent bird mess from ruining its paintwork.
He continued: "Many people don't realise how much damage bird droppings can do until it's too late.
"By taking a few proactive steps - such as choosing a less targeted colour, parking smart, and cleaning off droppings quickly - car owners can protect their paintwork and save themselves the cost of future repairs."
One of the most effective ways of preventing bird mess from damaging the paintwork of a car is by applying a protective substance on the bodywork.
Adding wax to the bodywork, or getting an expert to ceramic coat the vehicle, will give it a barrier that the acidic bird mess will need to work through before it can risk damaging a vehicle.
It can also help to improve the look of an older car, giving it a better shine and possibly making the colour more vivid.
