Three years. Three measly, meaningless years behind bars for the man in whose hands I, along with thousands of other patients, placed my body, my physical and mental health, my trust. Having been remanded in custody for more than six months, and with the time off for "good behaviour" he will no doubt get, the monster otherwise known as celebrity osteopath Torben Hersborg will be walking the streets again this time next year.
This massive betrayal of victims is yet another failure of justice. Arrested before Christmas and charged with spying on female students as they undressed at their hall of residence, the 64-year-old Danish-born married father of two had been my health guru and friend for five years.
Surely they had the wrong guy? He was a committed family man, he boasted constantly of his children's achievements. He enthused about roaming the globe, treating a rock star client on tour, and managing the fitness of a national football team, a Wimbledon champion, a Hollywood star.
Our relationship unravelled like dropped knitting when I heard the news. Shock turned to horror as I recalled the number of friends I had recommended him to. Worse, I had sent him my child. If footage is found among his vile collection, that makes me responsible. The hands in which I had felt safer than with anyone else in my life were encased in black gloves at the time of his arrest.
They had lined the back seat of his car with black bin liners, and were clutching cameras and a telescope. Blood truly turns to ice in such moments. Mine is running cold still. Thus began the sleepless nights, the anxiety attacks, the nightmares. I constantly rewind mental footage of our sessions at his practice when we were the only two there.
Not always available for weekday sessions due to travel, Torben began offering me slots on Sundays. Many recording devices were later seized from his home. Had he also installed cameras in the toilets, the treatment room, the area where I changed?
Given the likelihood that I will never know, how am I, along with fellow victims, supposed to process this? Having written extensively about him, I should be a valuable source to the Metropolitan Police. Commissioner Rowley, I'm still waiting.
