Why is the tongue of snakes divided into two parts?

Send Push

Hundreds of species of snakes are found in the world. Some of these snakes are poisonous, while some are non-poisonous. If the bite of some snakes is not treated properly, then the person can even die. But do you know why the tongue of a snake is divided into two parts? Today we will tell you the story behind this.

The Secret of the Snake's Tongue

The tongue of a snake is divided into two parts, but there is not only scientific reason behind this, but also religious belief. This is mentioned in the Indian epic Mahabharata. According to this, Maharishi Kashyap had thirteen wives. One of them was named Kadru and the other was named Vinita. It is believed that Kadru gave birth to all the snakes, and all of them were the sons and daughters of Kadru and Maharishi Kashyap. At the same time, Vinita received Garuda Putra from Maharishi Kashyap.

Horsetail controversy

According to the story, once Kadru and Vinita saw a white horse in the forest. The horse charmed both of them. There was an argument between the two as to what was the colour of the horse's tail - black or white. The argument escalated so much that both of them made a bet with each other that whoever is truthful will win and the loser will become a lifelong slave. Kadru said that the horse's tail is black, while Vinita said that it is white.

Order of Kadru

Kadru ordered her children to reduce their size and wrap themselves around the horse's tail so that it can be seen from a distance that the horse's tail is not white but black. But Kadru's children refused to do this. After this, Kadru started cursing her children. Out of fear, the children agreed to wrap themselves around the horse's tail.

Garuda's effort

According to the story, Vinita accepted to become a slave after losing the bet. When Vinita's son Garuda came to know of this, he approached his serpent brothers and prayed to free his mother. The serpent brothers put a condition to Garuda that if he brings a pot of nectar from heaven, his mother would be freed.

Amrit's context

Garuda traveled to get the pot of nectar and brought it to earth. But when the snake brothers went to take a bath before consuming the nectar, Lord Indra reached the earth chasing the nectar and took the pot back. When the snake brothers returned after taking a bath, they saw that the pot was not there. They thought that some drops of nectar must have fallen on the Kush, so they started licking the Kush. Because of this, their tongue got cut into two parts.

scientific approach

Scientists also believe that snakes use one part of their tongue to sense smell, while the other part is used to take down food. In this way, the structure of the snake's tongue makes it different from other creatures.
