Chennai: On Monday, Tamil Nadu police detained more than 100 Samsung union employees who were planning to march towards the Kanchipuram Collector office with their demands. According to police officials, the employees were detained at Sri Sidheswarar Mahal.
The Samsung Employees Union has been protesting for the past seven days, demanding improved wages and working conditions. Last Thursday, a union representative met with Tamil Nadu Labour Department Minister C.V. Ganeshan at the Tamil Nadu Secretariat, but no resolution was reached. Following this, the employees continued their protest near the Sunkuwarchatiram factory without entering Kanchipuram city.
The employees are also seeking the release of CITU leader E. Muthukumar, who was detained by Kanchipuram police ahead of the planned march to the district collector's office. The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has accused the police of forcibly detaining the employees.
CITU State President A. Soundarajan met with Kanchipuram Collector Kalaiselvi and submitted a petition regarding the ongoing protest. Soundarajan claimed that the union was formed two months ago, and that the management has been pressuring employees to abandon the union and has harassed those who opposed this pressure.
"The formation of a union is a fundamental right, and there is no room for compromise," Soundarajan asserted. He added that the Collector has promised to review the issue, and that efforts will be made to meet Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. Soundarajan also condemned the detention of Samsung employees and the arrest of E. Muthukumar.
