As soon as we hear the name of dengue, we all get worried, because this disease affects millions of people every year and even takes the lives of many people. Scientists have been working for a long time on ways to eliminate mosquitoes that spread dengue. Now a major achievement has been made in this direction, in which a unique way has been discovered to stop the breeding of mosquitoes.
A unique way to make dengue mosquitoes deaf
Scientists have found a way to stop the reproduction of dengue-spreading mosquitoes by making them deaf. Actually, mosquitoes have physical relations with their partner while flying in the air. In this process, the male mosquito recognizes the female mosquito by listening to the sound of her wings and flies after her. This means that the hearing ability of mosquitoes is directly related to their reproduction. If male mosquitoes are unable to hear, they will not be able to mate with female mosquitoes, which will reduce their numbers.
genetic altering experiments
Researchers conducted a special experiment in this direction. They changed the genetics of mosquitoes so that their hearing ability was affected. These male mosquitoes were kept in a box with female mosquitoes, but even after three days these male mosquitoes did not mate with the female. The reason for this was that they were not able to hear the sound of the wings of the female mosquitoes, which stopped their reproduction.
Decrease in the number of disease-carrying mosquitoes
Scientists believe that female mosquitoes are responsible for spreading dengue and other diseases. If their breeding can be stopped, the total number of mosquitoes can be reduced and in this way the outbreak of dengue can be controlled.
Research on Aedes aegypti mosquito
This research has specifically focused on a species of mosquito called "Aedes aegypti". These mosquitoes are capable of transmitting the virus to about 40 million people every year. Scientists at the University of California conducted an in-depth study of the breeding habits of mosquitoes, in which it was observed that mosquitoes make physical contact while flying in the air in a few seconds to less than a minute. This research proved that the hearing ability of mosquitoes can be stopped using genetics, which can reduce their numbers drastically.
Prospects in the future
This research has emerged as a big hope to deal with diseases spread by mosquitoes. If this method can be successfully implemented on a large scale, then thousands of lives can be saved every year.
