British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has warmly welcomed a new member to his family— a Siberian kitten named Prince. As tradition allows, every Prime Minister can keep pets at the official residence, and Downing Street is no stranger to furry companions. Currently residing there is Larry, a cat who has become a beloved figure over the past 11 years.
On social media, images of the fluffy kitten have surfaced, showing him playfully resting his paws on the Prime Minister’s documents. Prince’s arrival follows extensive discussions with Starmer's children, who initially wanted a German Shepherd when they moved to Downing Street. In a conversation with the BBC in July, Starmer shared, “We are now getting a kitten instead of a dog. And this is an agreement after long negotiations—I said we’d get in the room and sort it out.”
Prince joins the ranks of Larry, who holds the title of 'Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office,' and Jojo, a rescue cat the family adopted before the election. Larry, known for his entertaining antics, is the longest-serving resident of Downing Street. A humorous post on X (formerly Twitter) from Larry declared, “I live here permanently; politicians are temporary residents,” along with a picture of him at the lectern.
The arrival of Prince has sparked discussions about Larry's eventual retirement, as he continues to age. Some reports suggest that Downing Street is preparing a statement regarding Larry’s passing when that time comes. However, Larry is not ready to relinquish his title just yet. In a playful reply on X, he asserted, “My position as best looking cat on Downing Street remains unchallenged,” in response to a photo of the Prime Minister with Prince.
