IIT Kanpur Announces Reserved Seats for Olympiad Performers in BTech and BS Programs

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has introduced an exciting new admission pathway for its BTech and BS programs, enabling top performers from international Olympiads to secure seats directly in five key departments starting from the 2025-26 academic year. This move provides an alternative route to admission, bypassing the traditional Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced for students excelling in Olympiads related to mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and informatics.

The reserved seats will be available in the following departments: Biological Sciences and Bioengineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Chemistry, Economic Sciences, and Mathematics and Statistics. This initiative is designed for students with an in-depth understanding of their subject areas, giving them an opportunity to pursue higher education at IIT Kanpur based on their Olympiad achievements.

To qualify, candidates must meet the age requirements applicable to JEE (Advanced) aspirants and have completed their class XII (or equivalent) with physics, chemistry, and mathematics as compulsory subjects. Additionally, they must have participated in a relevant Olympiad training camp. However, students who were previously admitted to IITs via JoSAA or whose IIT admissions were canceled are not eligible for this route.

The allocation of seats is as follows: two seats in Biological Sciences and Bioengineering, six in Computer Science and Engineering, two in Chemistry, three in Economic Sciences, and four in Mathematics and Statistics. Olympiads recognized by the government, such as INMO/IMO, INOI/IOI, INChO, and IMOTC, will be considered for eligibility.

The selection process will take place in two stages. First, each department will shortlist candidates based on their Olympiad rankings. Shortlisted candidates will then undergo a mandatory written exam and, if required, an interview. A selection committee, led by the Dean of Academic Affairs, will oversee the process to ensure a fair and transparent allocation of seats.

Professor Shalabh, the Dean of Academic Affairs at IIT Kanpur, emphasized the importance of this initiative, saying, "Our Olympiad-based admissions pathway is designed to attract the brightest minds from international competitions. By introducing this program, we aim to foster a diverse and innovative academic environment that supports India's growth and enhances global competitiveness."

Applications for this new pathway will open in March 2025 and close by the end of the month. Each department will conduct its assessments by May, ensuring that there is ample time for the screening and final selection process.
