NCIS: Tony and Ziva broadcasts weekly on Paramount Plus and the 10-episode series has already proved a massive success with viewers.

The spin-off from the long-running crime drama sees Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo return to their beloved characters Tony DiNozzo and Ziva David.

The will-they-won't-they pair haven't shared screen time for 12 years since NCIS season 11, making their comeback an incredibly moving experience for devotees.

Weatherly chatted exclusively to Reach publications about his ambitions for a second series and what it could involve.

Expressing appreciation for the programme's home, he said: "I think what's awesome about Paramount Plus and how you can watch this show... there's a gateway to a thousand-plus episodes of other NCIS's and the original."

"So you can really go down a rabbit hole of Naval Criminal Investigation.

"But because our show isn't set in that military context, Tony and Ziva is really a show about these two characters and like Indiana Jones or James Bond, those kinds of characters in a franchise go on adventures.

"We have this ability to go on a 10 hour adventure, so that's my hope for any continuing stories that we would be able to tell."

Revealing some particular storylines he'd love to explore, he continued: "Maybe like a grail quest of sorts, whether that's a nuclear weapon or The Ark of the Covenant.

"Whatever the cause of their adventure, it's really about deepening their contact and their knowledge of themselves and each other.

"And inviting the audience to go on a really shallow, fun, superficial adventure but also have a lot of emotional lessons and feelings.

"That's the complexity we are allowed to do on Paramount Plus, for which I am profoundly grateful."

The debut series is set to wrap up on October 23, with both Weatherly and de Pablo keen to return for a second run.

Speaking to TV Insider, de Pablo revealed: "We're just grateful that we got a chance to do it, and the rest is the rest. If we got a chance to do it again, we'd be thrilled."
