Humpy Wheeler dead: Disney star dies as fans pay tribute

A Disney actor has died aged 86. Humpy Wheeler, who appeared in Pixar film Cars and Cars 3, died of natural causes, his family has confirmed.

The voice actor and NASCAR executive voiced Tex – a Cadillac Coupe de Ville – in animated Pixar film Cars. Tex was the boss of motor racing sponsor Dinoco in the hit film, which Humpy reprised in the 2017 Cars 3.

Aside from appearing in the Disney film, Humpy was best known as the longtime president of the Charlotte Motor Speedway. He also worked in stock car racing and IndyCar, which gave him the nickname of ’the PT Barnum of NASCAR'.

Humpy entered the world of Hollywood when Cars director John Lasseter visited the Charlotte Motor Speedway in 2000 for a race and loved his voice.

The star's family confirmed he died of "natural causes" on Wednesday. NASCAR chairman Jim France added: “Humpy Wheeler was a visionary whose name became synonymous with promotion and innovation in our sport.

"During his decades leading Charlotte Motor Speedway, Humpy transformed the fan experience through his creativity, bold ideas and tireless passion. His efforts helped expand NASCAR’s national footprint, cement Charlotte as a must-visit racing and entertainment complex.”

Humpy landed his own TV show in 2008, titled The Humpy Show on the Speed Channel. However, the series only lasted one episode.

It didn't deter Humpy from appearing on the small screen though, as he starred in an episode of American Pickers. He donated items from his personal NASCAR collection to be restored on the show.

Tributes from fans have been pouring in for Humpy since the news of his death. One said: “RIP legend!”

Another added: “Humpy Wheeler wasn’t just part of racing – he shaped it. His vision, passion and love for the sport will keep the engines roaring for generations. Humpy Forever!”

Someone else wrote: “Humpy Wheeler was a great man who helped a lot of drivers and the sport grow, so sad to hear of his passing.”
