Blackpool have released winger Malcom Ebiowei just 30 days after he signed a two-year contract with the club. Ebiowei was linked with a move to Manchester United three years ago, but is now looking for a new side after the League One club let him go without explanation.
The 22-year-old winger joined the Tangerines on August 5, signing a two-year contract with the option of a further 12 months. He arrived from Crystal Palace, where he spent three years, gaining experience on loan with Hull and Oxford and with Belgian side RWD Molenbeek.
Palace signed Ebiowei in June 2022, beating United to his signature after he impressed playing for Wayne Rooney’s Derby as an 18-year-old. Big things were expected of him at Blackpool, but it hasn’t worked out under Steve Bruce.
A statement on September 4 read: “Blackpool Football Club can announce that Malcolm Ebiowei has left the club by mutual consent. The club wishes Malcolm all the best for the future.”

Ebiowei made just four appearances for the club, the last coming against Plymouth on August 23. Speaking upon his arrival, he spoke of his excitement at joining the club.
"I’m really grateful to be able to work under someone like Steve Bruce, and can’t wait to get going,” he said. “The conversations we had were nothing but positive and I’m really looking forward to the future here and playing in front of the supporters.”
Bruce said: “We are delighted to welcome Malcolm and look forward to watching him in action. He possesses real ability and is a tricky player to come up against. He is the kind of player that will get our supporters off their seats, and we look forward to welcoming him into the group this week.”
That never materialised for Blackpool, but there was genuine hype surrounding Ebiowei three years ago after he made 16 appearances for Derby. After deciding to leave the Rams, who were relegated from the Championship following a 21-point deduction, he reportedly had the choice between United and Palace.
Having been born in south London, he chose to head home, signing for Palace, whose chairman Steve Parish underlined the hype surrounding Ebiowei. “I’m delighted that Malcolm has chosen Crystal Palace as the best place to continue his development, following his impressive breakthrough into senior football in recent months,” Parish said.
“He is a highly coveted young player, and we very much expect to provide a platform for him to flourish at the highest level.”
He only made five appearances for the first team at Palace, who sent him on loan to Hull, Oxford and Molenbeek. The young winger will now again attempt to find a new club, having been released by Blackpool.
