"I'm not even Mexican, I'm Puerto Rican, but my wife is Mexican - there's no right to treat people like that," Mr Ortiz told KTLA. Mr Ortiz told the outlet that there had been no problems with the couple as far as the service went until he dropped the bill at the table.

However he did get an uncomfortable feeling from them. "The way they were looking at me, you can tell when something is not right," he said.

And instead of a tip, when Mr Ortiz opened the bill he discovered the message. "I've been working as a server since 2014, and this is the first time this has happened to me," he said.

Mr Ortiz also said that he removed the 18.5% gratuity that is automatically added from the bill, which the receipt states can be done if the customer alerts staff.

The couple reportedly paid in cash and Mr Ortiz said they left so quickly he didn't have time to follow up the matter with them.

"Probably because they saw me, they know I'm hispanic, they thought I'm Mexican or illegal or I don't know what they're thinking," he said. "This is happening because of what's happening with President Trump right now... I think that's the reason people are acting like this."

But Mr Ortiz said despite the couple's racist message didn't shake him and he is still proud of what he does and who he is. "I'm proud of what I do... I'm a server; that's the way I support my kids, that's the way I support my family," he said.

He added that he alerted management to the incident and that Planet Hollywood corporate would be investigating. Planet Hollywood in the Tom Bradley Terminal is set to permanently close on Saturday, leaving Ortiz unemployed.
