Barry Keoghan reveals key turning point in addiction struggle

Barry Keoghan has recounted the moment his driver took him to rehab. Earlier this month, opened up about his addiction struggles in an interview with a magazine.

The Marvel's Eternals actor reportedly showed lasting injuries on his arms that he had which the report in Hollywood Authentic stated he showed as "proof" of what he had endured. In his searingly open conversation, Barry shared that it was a driver who helped save him from himself as he drove him to a rehabilitation facility in the UK.

The star opened up about his close friendship with his driver, Niall, who joined him on a flight before driving him to get treatement. Barry "Niall literally drove me and put me on a plane himself, came with me and brought me to the rehab in England.

"I went back to visit. It was nice to see the staff again, and for them to see the change in me. They were quite emotional about it. I'm forever grateful."

Giving further credit to his friend for helping him get aid, Barry said, "When I say that Niall is the best, I mean it, because no one else put me on the plane, by the hand, literally got on the plane with me."

Barry has been open about his devastation over the death of his mother, Debbie, who lost her life to addiction in 2003. Discussing the impact of addiction in his family, Barry explained that his father, two uncles and a cousin all lost their lives to drugs.

Discussing his late mother's diary, Barry quoted an entry which read: "Well, tonight went okay for me so I hope I have the strength to not touch anything tomorrow."

He added: "I got to read that at . I sent a picture to my brother, because he was in rehab over Christmas. I sent him that picture of her last page. I said 'Just look at that. You've got a chance now.' You can feel the pain in this."

Last year, Barry shared his memories and heartbreak over his mother while speaking to Louis Theroux on a podcast show. He opened up to the presenter about his mother and sadly recalled how addiction "caught her".

He said: "That kind of haunts me still, you don't forget those things."

He went on to share his throughs on being taken into the care system, saying: "You don't forget waiting on the social worker steps and waiting for the new family to come and play with you in the playground they have in the office and see if it's going to work and then go with them to a whole new area and a whole new home. [...]

"And you know, the car journeys there and they're the things that haunt and I don't blame her. It's a sickness."

Barry said: "My mum, she was lovely. She was gorgeous, almost like six-foot, dark hair, just beautiful. Like every lad was chasing her and this thing caught her, like many families. It's sad to see the deterioration of people around the area and see people kind of struggle with it and the recovery they're in now. It caught my mum, it caught my uncle who died of it and caught my father as well."

He added: "She was just unable to look after us.[…] My father wasn't there and so we got taken into care and no one knew about this. I think she was too embarrassed to tell my granny and so no one knew that's when we went through all that. All the different homes."
