Mumbai's long-awaited Metro Line 3, also known as the Aqua Line, officially opens today, October 7. This significant development enhances connectivity across the city, with Phase 1 linking the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) to Aarey JVLR in the suburbs.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated this crucial 12.5 km section last week, which connects both terminals of the Mumbai airport and integrates with the Ghatkopar-Andheri-Versova Metro Line 1 at Marol Naka station.

Key Information
  • Operational Hours: The first train departs at 6:30 a.m. and the last at 10:30 p.m., with Sunday services starting at 8:30 a.m. Expect trains every 3 to 4 minutes.

  • Ticket Fares: The fare structure starts at ₹10 and goes up to ₹50 for this section. Once the entire Colaba-SEEPZ-Aarey corridor is completed, the maximum fare will be ₹70.

  • Service Frequency: The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) plans to run 96 services daily between Aarey and BKC. Each eight-coach train can accommodate around 2,500 passengers.

Phase 1 consists of 10 stations, nine of which are underground. The stations include:

  • Impact and Highlights

    Prime Minister Modi shared highlights from his recent journey on the metro, interacting with various commuters, including students and beneficiaries of government schemes.

    The Metro Line 3 is expected to significantly reduce vehicular traffic, eliminating up to 6.5 lakh trips and lowering road congestion by 35%. It’s estimated to save approximately 3.54 lakh liters of fuel annually.

    The line will operate at a maximum speed of 85 km/h, with an average speed of 35 km/h. Furthermore, Ashwini Bhide, the managing director of MMRC, confirmed that 48 trained captains, including 10 women, will operate the trains, reflecting the commitment to inclusivity in its workforce.
