A 23-year-old woman returning home from a friend's place was brutally attacked with an iron rod by a history-sheeter on police record who had been banished from Mumbai. The incident occurred on Saturday at 1 AM in the Chembur area. The young woman suffered severe head injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at Sion Hospital.
The Chembur police have registered a case of attempted murder against the accused, Sumit alias Pintya Sangharakshak Sorte, 32, who fled the scene immediately after the attack, and a manhunt is currently underway.
According to the police, Sorte, a resident of Siddharth Colony, is a notorious criminal on police record. More than 11 serious crimes, including assault, grievous hurt, death threats, kidnapping, sexual assault, molestation, theft, and burglary, are registered against him at the Chembur, Chunabhatti, and Nehru Nagar police stations. The police have arrested him in most of these cases, and he is currently out on bail.
The police had taken preventive action against him, and in June 2025, he was banished from Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai for two years. Despite this, he illegally entered Mumbai and launched the brutal attack on the young woman, which has now come to light.

According to sources, the incident took place at 1 AM on Saturday at K.N. Gaikwad Marg, Siddharth Colony, in front of the Bhairav Jewellers shop in Chembur. The 23-year-old victim, a resident of the Lal Dongar area, was returning home from a friend's house. The accused, Sorte, stopped her on the road. After arguing with her, he brutally attacked her on the head with an iron rod.

Upon receiving information from local residents, the Chembur police rushed to the scene and promptly admitted the injured woman to Sion Hospital. She is currently undergoing treatment.
Manhunt launched for fugitive
Based on an initial inquiry with the victim, the police have booked the accused, Sorte, under charges of attempted murder and other applicable provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Act.
