Mumbai News: BMC Extends Bidding Deadline To June 23 For ₹2,368 Crore Deonar Landfill Bioremediation Project

Mumbai: The BMC has extended the bidding deadline for the bioremediation of 185 lakh tonnes of legacy waste at the Deonar landfill to June 23. The extension comes after participants in the pre-bid meeting raised multiple queries and sought more time to assess the project thoroughly.

On May 14, the BMC floated a Rs 2,368-crore tender for a large-scale legacy waste remediation project at the Deonar landfill, aiming to clear 185 lakh tonnes of waste over three years. The plan includes deploying 1,200 vehicles to remove 2,300 tonnes of waste daily. However, during the pre-bid meeting on May 23, around 21 companies raised key concerns.

These included the availability of additional land parcels for depositing treated waste, the feasibility of meeting the ambitious three-year timeline, and clarity on procedures for obtaining environmental and CRZ clearances. Bidders also sought assurance on whether the BMC would appoint a dedicated nodal officer to expedite approvals.

"With the original bid submission deadline set to end on June 3, has now been extended by 21 days to allow bidders more time to study the project in detail," said a senior civic official.

Deonar dumping ground—Mumbai’s oldest and largest landfill—has been operational since 1927. Spread over 120 hectares, the site is overwhelmed with towering heaps of legacy waste and remains one of the city's most pressing environmental challenges.
