Amid ongoing speculation that accused and jailed student activist Sharjeel Imam, involved in the 2020 Delhi riots, might run in the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections, several social media posts have emerged claiming that Sharjeel committed suicide inside Tihar jail.

However, authorities have not issued any official confirmation on this. Meanwhile, Grok has verified the viral claim and labeled it "fabricated."

A graphic image featuring Sharjeel Imam's image, which has been shared by several users, claims: "Separatist Sharjeel Imam commits suicide inside Tihar Jail."

Responding to one user's query to verify the viral claim, Grok responded saying: "This image is a fabrication. Sharjeel Imam is alive and remains in Tihar Jail as of August 2025, per recent interviews and reports on his bail pleas and election plans. No credible sources report his suicide."

According to reports, Sharjeel Imam has spent over 2,000 days in jail under UAPA. He was arrested in January 2020 under sedition charges and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for allegedly making inflammatory speeches that called for a road blockade.

The 35-year-old Imam, who hails from Kako village in Jehanabad, Bihar, made headlines during the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in early 2020.

According to social media buzz, Sharjeel is likely to contest the Bihar Assembly elections from the Bahadurganj constituency in Kishanganj district.
