Mumbai Division of Central Railway has received two new Government Railway Police (GRP) stations at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) and Asangaon on August 15, 2025. The new GRP stations were formally inaugurated on Friday on the occasion of Independence Day, marking a significant step towards enhancing safety and law enforcement for the growing number of commuters in the suburban and long-distance railway networks. With the addition of these two new GRP stations, the total number of GRP stations under the Mumbai GRP Commissionerate has increased from 17 to 19, according to the Commissioner of Government Railway Police, Mumbai, Rakesh Kalasagar.
LTT GRP Station to Cover Six Key Locations
The LTT GRP station has been carved out from the jurisdictions of the existing Kurla, Wadala, and Vashi Government Railway Police stations and will cover six key stations: Tilaknagar, Chembur, Mankhurd, Govandi, LTT, and parts of Kurla. LTT, being one of the busiest railway terminals in Mumbai, currently handles around 30 pairs of long-distance trains daily. Authorities believe the dedicated GRP presence at LTT will significantly improve crime prevention, ensure quicker emergency responses, and offer enhanced protection for passengers—especially women.

Asangaon GRP Station to Serve Nine Stations
The LTT GRP station will be manned by one Police Inspector, four Assistant Police Inspectors/Sub-Inspectors, and 72 police personnel, including women officers. Similarly, the new GRP station at Asangaon has been carved out from the Kalyan GRP’s jurisdiction and will serve nine stations stretching from Titwala to Kasara—a corridor witnessing a surge in suburban train traffic and passenger footfall. With average daily ticket sales exceeding 15,000 and revenue crossing ₹1.5 lakh, Asangaon had long been considered a priority for upgraded policing infrastructure. The Asangaon Government Railway Police station will operate with one Police Inspector, three Assistant Police Inspectors/Sub-Inspectors, and 42 police personnel.
Speaking on the development, Commissioner Kalasagar stated that the new stations would increase police visibility, improve crime prevention and control, and offer a stronger sense of security for all passengers, with particular emphasis on the safety of women commuters.
Upgraded Facilities at Dadar and Panvel
In addition to the two new stations, existing GRP offices at Dadar and Panvel have also been relocated to newly constructed and better-equipped buildings. At Dadar, the GRP office, which was previously located on Platform 9A and often led to congestion, has been moved to a newly built facility above the station manager’s office. The move is expected to ease passenger flow and support future infrastructure development at the station.
At Panvel, the GRP station has also been shifted to a modern facility, aimed at improving operational efficiency and enhancing passenger interaction.

Earlier this year, in March 2025, the state government approved the creation of four new GRP stations in the Mumbai Government Railway Police Commissionerate. Besides the newly inaugurated LTT and Asangaon stations, new GRP stations are also planned at Bhayandar and Ambernath, which are expected to become operational in the near future.
Focus on Passenger Security
Given that Mumbai’s suburban railway network serves millions of passengers every day, authorities emphasize that strengthening the GRP’s ground-level presence is critical not only for crime prevention but also for ensuring timely responses and efficient service delivery. “We are committed to making railway travel safer and more secure. These new stations are an important step in that direction,” a senior GRP official said.
