World Lung Day: Pollution weakens lungs, shortens lifespan by 8 years! Doctors reveal 3 preventative measures..

Send Push

How to Protect Lungs from Pollution: Every year on September 25th, the world celebrates World Lung Day. This day reminds us how important our lungs are and how quickly they can be weakened by pollution, smoking, and a changing climate. This year, the theme for 2025 is "Healthy Lungs, Healthy Life," which is especially important for India, as the country's air quality continues to deteriorate, and millions of people breathe toxic air every day. A recent Lancet Planetary Health study (2024) confirmed that PM2.5, or fine dust particles, can directly enter the human body's lungs and bloodstream, causing long-term damage. This impacts not only health but also longevity.

What does the doctor have to say?
Pulmonologist Dr. P.P. Bose, who also runs the Saans Foundation, says, “Living in Delhi is like living in a gas chamber. Reports suggest that breathing in this toxic air can shorten your lifespan by up to eight years. This air constantly attacks the lungs – causing coughs, asthma, and sometimes even serious damage.”

What are the precautions?
According to Dr. Bose, three things are most important for lung protection:

If you have to go out, wear an N95 mask.

Use an air purifier at home.

Constantly check the Air Quality Index and avoid going outside if the air quality is very poor.

He clearly states, “Lungs are precious. Small steps are enough to protect them.” The problem is that people only worry about lung health when the AQI shows “hazardous” or when news of smog appears. But lung care isn't a seasonal task. It should become a daily habit, just like brushing your teeth or washing your hands.

Raising Awareness is Important
Dr. Siddhant Dutta, Founder-Director of PulmoRehab Care, believes that the most effective way to bridge this gap is to educate people about respiratory health and lifestyle. Anyone suffering from chronic respiratory disease can improve their health through appropriate exercise, education, and behavioral changes.

According to Dr. Dutta, practicing breathing exercises, quitting smoking, and maintaining proper ventilation at home can significantly protect our lungs from pollution.

The Importance of World Lung Day

World Lung Day is not just about warning people against pollution or tobacco use; it reminds us that life is impossible without our lungs and how important it is to take care of them. Eating a balanced diet, staying active, wearing a mask when necessary, avoiding smoking, and getting regular checkups are not options, but investments in a long and healthy life. So this September 25th, let's remember that healthy lungs are not a luxury, but a necessity.
