Heart Attack Causes in Women: After the COVID-19 epidemic, there has been a huge jump in the cases of heart attack. Now, even younger people are falling prey to heart attacks while on the go. It is often believed that the biggest reason for a heart attack is the accumulation of fat or increased cholesterol in the blood arteries. However, new research by Mayo Clinic has revealed a shocking revelation. It has been found that there are many reasons behind heart attacks in people under the age of 65, and especially women, who are given less attention. These factors become the cause of a heart attack in women.

According to the report of Mayo Clinic News Network, a new study has found that more than 50% of heart attacks in women under the age of 65 are not due to blockage in the arteries. The biggest cause of heart attack in women is spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD), embolism, infection, or anemia. SCAD is a condition in which the wall of the arteries of the heart suddenly ruptures or an internal tear is formed. This affects blood flow, and the heart does not get enough oxygen. This leads to a heart attack. This condition often occurs in seemingly healthy women with low other cardiovascular risk factors. Data from 15 years was used in this study.

This study shows that when women have a heart attack, it is often misdiagnosed. For example, when SCAD occurs, it is often mistaken for a heart attack caused by blocked plaque and can be misdiagnosed. In addition, hormonal changes, postpartum conditions, and genetic characteristics also increase the risk of SCAD and other non-plaque causes. Talking about embolism, it occurs when a clot or other object enters the blood and blocks the blood vessels. Apart from this, conditions like infection and anemia also cause stress on the heart and put an extra burden on the heart. Heart attacks caused by these causes also had a higher rate of death after 5 years.

Medically, it is believed that the main cause of heart attacks is blockage in the arteries. This is called atherosclerosis, which is caused by the accumulation of cholesterol and plaque. However, this study shows that these traditional causes are not always the case, especially in young women. If doctors only look for plaque, the diagnosis of SCAD or other causes may be missed. This study suggests that the treatment and management of heart attacks should be based on the cause and not just on the assumption of artery blockage. If someone has SCAD, conservative care may be considered instead of stent placement in every case.
