The festival of Karva Chauth is considered very special for married women. During this time, women observe a fast, fasting all day, for the long life of their husbands. Therefore, it's crucial to take care of health along with fasting, especially digestive health.

Therefore, it's crucial to take special care of certain things. To learn more about this, we spoke with Dr. Vishal Khurana, Director of Gastroenterology at Metro Hospital, Faridabad, about how to maintain energy and gut health throughout the day by following the right diet and following some important tips before and during the fast. Let's explore the details:
What to eat during Sargi (before the fast):
Eat water-rich fruits (watermelon, cucumber), coconut water, buttermilk, and yogurt to keep your body hydrated and your digestive system active.
Eat protein and fiber-rich foods like oats, porridge, lentils, and dried fruits to maintain energy and keep you full throughout the day.
Avoid fried, spicy, or overly sweet foods, caffeine, and junk food. These can cause heaviness in the stomach, acidity, and increased thirst.
What to Eat When Breaking the Fast
After fasting all day, drink coconut water, buttermilk, or plain water in small sips. Instead of eating heavy food straight away, first eat dates or fresh fruit like papaya, apple, etc., to gradually nourish and energize the stomach.
After that, eat light, homemade meals like curd rice, moong dal khichdi, or roti-vegetable. Remember to avoid overeating suddenly.
Avoid fried, spicy foods, cold drinks, sweets, and soda drinks; these can cause gas, acidity, and indigestion.
Special Tips for Gut Health
Probiotic foods like buttermilk and yogurt are beneficial for the stomach during Sargi and breaking the fast.
A small amount of cumin or black salt can be added to buttermilk; it is good for digestion.
Give yourself rest throughout the day, avoid excessive physical activity, and give your body some rest.
What should diabetic patients keep in mind?
Diabetic patients should take special precautions to maintain their health during the Karva Chauth fast.
A productive fast requires eating right, taking medications on time, and monitoring blood sugar. Women with uncontrolled diabetes, frequent hypoglycemia, or kidney or heart problems should avoid strict fasting.
Instead, they can opt for modified fasting. This involves drinking 1-2 glasses of water or coconut water before sunrise. After moonrise, i.e., after breaking the fast, drink water or coconut water first, followed by a light meal.
To avoid a sugar spike, avoid fried foods and sweets immediately after the fast.

If your blood sugar drops below 70 or above 300, break the fast immediately and consult a doctor.
If diabetes is not under control or there are complications, it is important to consult a doctor before fasting.
Thus, with proper diet planning, regular monitoring, and a doctor's advice, diabetic patients can safely observe the Karva Chauth fast and also take care of their gut health.
