Tamil Nadu challenges Madras High Court's E-Pass order for Ooty and Kodaikanal

According to a recent update, the Tamil Nadu government has submitted a review petition challenging the Madras High Court ’s decision on the matter of e-passes for tourist vehicles visiting Ooty and Kodaikanal . In its plea, the state has urged the court to finalize the daily vehicle limits.

How it started?

Tamil Nadu government received reports from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru as these institutions are currently conducting studies to determine the number of tourists these hill stations can accommodate.

The Madras High Court’s order, which was issued for the summer season running from April to June this year, has set a cap on vehicles. For Ooty, the limit is 6,000 vehicles on weekdays and 8,000 on weekends, while for Kodaikanal, it is 4,000 vehicles on weekdays and 6,000 on weekends. However, the Tamil Nadu government has argued that any restrictions on vehicle numbers should be based on scientific research and not arbitrary limitations.

The Madras High Court’s ruling on e-passes, which took effect on April 1, sparked strong reactions. In Ooty, local shopkeepers and business owners went on strike, closing their shops in protest against the move. Many expressed concerns that the new restrictions could harm their businesses and livelihoods, which rely heavily on tourist traffic.

The Tamil Nadu government’s review petition will be heard by the Madras High Court tomorrow. The state has requested that the court consider awaiting the findings of the expert studies before implementing a fixed cap on the number of tourist vehicles allowed into these hill stations.
